How to Install Arcade Cabinet Side Art: A Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you're restoring a classic Pac-Man cabinet or building a custom MAME build, installing side art is one of the most satisfying upgrades you can make. Follow this guide for a clean, bubble-free install every time.

What You'll Need

  • Your arcade side art decals
  • A squeegee or credit card
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
  • Lint-free cloth
  • A helper (optional but recommended for large panels)

Step 1 — Clean the Surface

Before anything touches your cabinet, wipe down the side panel thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Remove any old adhesive, dust, or grease. A clean surface is the single biggest factor in a long-lasting install.

Step 2 — Dry Fit First

Peel back just a few inches of the backing and position the decal on the panel without fully committing. Check alignment against the edges and any existing artwork borders. Take your time here — it's much easier to adjust now than after the adhesive grabs.

Step 3 — Peel and Apply

Starting from one edge, slowly peel the backing while pressing the decal down with your squeegee in firm, overlapping strokes. Work from the center outward to push air bubbles toward the edges. Don't rush this step.

Step 4 — Work Out Any Bubbles

Small bubbles can often be pushed out with the squeegee. For stubborn ones, use a pin to make a tiny puncture, then press the air out. Bubbles near edges can usually be lifted gently and re-laid if caught early.

Step 5 — Trim and Finish

If your decal has any overhang, use a sharp utility knife to trim flush with the cabinet edge. Run your squeegee along all edges one final time to ensure full adhesion.

Pro Tips

  • Install in a warm room — cold temperatures make vinyl stiff and harder to work with
  • If your cabinet has curves or routed edges, use a heat gun on low to make the vinyl more pliable
  • Always order a spare — mistakes happen, especially on your first install
